Matěj Ruppert sets out to investigate a family legend about his great-grandmother Františka, who, out of unhappy love, is said to have fired a gun in a synagogue at her sweetheart as he was marrying another woman. Where did she get the revolver? How was such an act punished at the beginning of the twentieth century? What was life like in women’s prisons of the time? What will Matěj discover about the poor shanty settlements that sprang up on the edges of towns, and why do the last witnesses still remember them fondly? How would Matěj have fared alongside his ancestors, the Vltava raftsmen, and what was life on the river like in the heyday of timber rafting? Will the famous musician find other musicians in his family? And how can it happen that even an extraordinary talent falls into oblivion in Bohemia?
